Sal's Citizenship & Australia Day

It was a special Australia Day for us this year as Sal received her Citizenship and is now a dual National, although I don't think she will ever sound anything but English....wish I could say the same for the kids!........Immi "Sheila" Dorsett is now completely Native.

The full day started with an open air concert at 0830 in a Canberra City park - big band / Sinatra style music....a bit early, but my Boss was the lead signer and the office put on a full attendance....its a bit odd having your wing commander singing romantic songs to you.......ahhhhhh!

Having done our bit for my Annual Report, we headed down to Lake Burley Griffin to catch sight of the flypast and 21 Gun salute, both done to coincide with the completion of the ACT Citizenship award ceremonies led by the Prime Minister.

Mid PM we headed to the "delights" of Queanbeyan Park for Sal's Citizenship Ceremony (similar to the ACT Ceremony in one way only...the weather was good) Queanbeyan is an intriguing town with an interesting mix of residents who all benefit from slightly lower than average house prices ....stop there.
Having seen the 30 minute ACT Citizenship Ceremony that morning, we had great hopes for the Queanbeyan City Council's version and gathered for registration promptly at 4PM, ready for a 5PM start.

We were shown to our allocated plastic seats which each had a free Aussie flag, National Anthem cheat sheet (spelling mistake - "Girt by Sea" should obviously read "Dirt") and a piece of paper to leave on the chair in your absence to ensure that no other guest sat there or no local stole the chair!

After another 30 minutes of watching the crowds gather, we discovered the Order of Ceremony on the back of the National Anthem sheet...OMG! It was huge, the list of events and dignitaries who would speak dwarfed the little line in the middle of the page that read "Citizenship Ceremony".

We started as scheduled and there were countless rambling speeches, from Councillors, Local dignitaries and even the Manager of Woolworths!!! Highlights included the musical interlude given by a local, somewhat elderly, choir. We naively expected just the one song, but when the Deputy Mayor stood to speak as the first song slowly finished, she received a hard stare from the conductor, quickly followed by a flicking of hymn book pages and the start of another song. This stand up - errrr no - sit down routine went on for 3 Songs!

In the last of many speeches, the choir were thanked yet again, but the speaker did say that he was unable to sing along in his usual fashion as he didn't know the words to the last song.....I think some had had a page faf and they were actually singing a number of different songs at the same time! Priceless.

Finally, after an hour that none of us will get back, the ceremony started. Sal joined her group to state the Oath and was then called forward to receive her official citizenship certificate and gift bag!?...contents: native plant, commemorative coin and a book on historical Queanbeyan!

Its not over yet.........Once all 29 New Citizens (From 15+ Counties.....sadly no Kazakhstan....name always makes me laugh (Borat)) had done the "grip and grin" it was time for more formalities: Australian Day Awards (Well done to all...inc the Choir! :-o ), Australia Shaped Cake - cut by honorary guest and a raffle prize draw...........1st prize.......Citizenship for you and 4 friends!........joke, it was a WII Fit.

At 1hr 45minutes and 93% through the order of ceremony, Sal spotted that the Choir were about to perform for a second time..........the Dorsett family decided that this was a good time for a comfort break for the children. A great event that we won't forget for a long time.

The day was finished on top of Mt Ainsle, watching the fireworks over the Lake.

Nana and Grandad arrive from Blighty

Dorsetts senior arrive for a 9 week stay in Aus, great time to enjoy our Summer....bit cool first few days (23C ish...in old money thats "warm") but by day 3 we were back to the usual mid 30Cs (Old money: "warm to hot").

BBQ in the mountains.

Having mastered toast, Dad takes his next step towards the Masterchief final.

A brief vist to Hertz to check out the hire car!

Visited our friends farm whilst they were away...water plants, check on horses, dog, chickens and peacock!

No you can't have one, not now, not never!

Our cat "Jazz"...looks a bit like Garfield.....'Yeah, yeah, I know the score, keep still until the flash light renders me blind for the evening....oh joy!'

No artificial colouring or preservatives used in the drink...

A brief spell of almost silence from Immi

Christmas Day

Just thought we’d show you Christmas day in Oz....

Skype fed into the TV helps so much...thats the Davies family in Hereford being a part of our Christmas morning.

Unfortunate shot this one, it looks like Sal is shouting to the web cam....”be patient, you’ll get your presents in 13hours alright”...........trust me, she wasn’t.

New bike, very happy.

Chester (also known as Baxter) enjoying his present.

Holly and her Beanie Kids (not all from Christmas!)

Worrying shot for Dad - just starting to plan moat around house.

Its not all Sunshine in Aus, very heavy rain all Christmas Day, but still warm enough for thongs (Whoops Flip-Flops...hey, and thongs!)

Lunch with friends.

Christmas Holiday...Part 2

Another night on our interesting campsite and having slept on what I wrote yesterday I thought that I had better make amends. Everyone is very well behaved and the 10PM to 8AM silent rule is adhered to by all, allowing everyone to get a peaceful night, which is just great for the kids. Indeed the first thing you hear in the morning is at 8.02 and it the noise of the previous nights beer bottles being emptied into the recycling bins....bliss.

Managed to get a few shots of the campsite that strangely didn’t make the brochure, obvious these images were taken with a hidden cam with no consideration for my personal safety. I particularly like the homemade pizza oven, great use of a beer keg and the beautiful “welcome” sign above the door.....I’m starting to warm to this place.

The refuge camp alley just opposite our caravan...5km/hr limit means that you are unlikey to reach the end with all 4 wheels still on the car.

Anyway, enough of the Campsite entertainment, we went out on the bikes today and dragged the girls a few Miles down the coast. Lovely views and some great coves and beaches.

180 deg view...bit clunky but you get the idea.

just to re-cap, we were on bikes, hence the gloves - I'm am in no way doing a tribute to the king of rock.

The PM was again spent on another beach.  Water very warm at this time of the year

Yes, I agree its obviously a screen shot from a Bond Movie, apart from the minor fact that the model is trying to regain control of her partly lost bikini bottoms.

Christmas Holiday at Gerroa

Combining Christmas with Summer Holidays isn’t the best idea that Aus have ever had, it means that the entire Country goes on leave at the same time and typically 90% of the population head to the Coast. Accommodation is inevitably at a premium so we starting looking for a pitch in a campsite in July. I recall phoning 15 sites (all full) before finally getting the last available slot at Gerroa Camp site on the NSW Coast.......how lucky am I, I thought and sat back thinking of those that hadn’t been as proactive as me. However, here I am sat in “the spectacular discovery campsite” which is 90% permanent vans that date back to the 1960s and packs of filthy kids running around.....picture a scene from Slum Dog Millionaire!....and to cap it all off the blinking neon sign at the gate says Vacancies....I now know why.

I have heard that the closer to Sydney that you stay the more likely you will be camping with the VB (Victoria Bitter) Crew......we are close enough, and this isn’t the crew it’s the Coach, Manager and Board Members.

Despite the interesting site and company, we have decided to press on and make the best of our week at the coast (there is literally nowhere else to stay)...so, to the beach it is..

Christmas Cake on the beach...how traditional is that?!

Quick Story - As we walked down the boardwalk with all of our beach gear a couple of little lads ran past us asking if there were any strong swimmer around. On arriving on the sand one of the local veterans approach me and asked to loan my surfboard as there were 2 guys trapped in a rip...I naturally said no, get lost its mine yes and he ran off in his budgie smugglers to perform a rescue. (2 inexperienced older gents exhausted from swimming against a rip. What an exciting start to the day.

The Dorsett camp - all watersports catered for and it only takes 40 minutes to drag everything from the car to our chosen spot.
